There are five natural resources in the game: beron, farsu, limbalt, olzine and ziryl. Each resource is used for a different purpose e.g. construction, shipbuilding, engine fuel. Resources can be accrued in the following ways:
- Mining: can provide a long-term supply of resources from beneath a planet's surface (deep mines can be used to mine indefinitely once the deposit accessible to standard mines has been exhausted).
- Collecting surface resources: some planets have deposits of resources on their surface ready to use (without having to be mined). They can be transferred to a ship within the planet's orbit. If a colony is formed, any surface resources become part of the colony's stockpile.
- Recycling structures: dismantling a structure will return 80% of the resources that were used in its original construction back to the colony.
- Recycling ships: when a ship is recycled while in orbit of a planet with a shipyard, that planet's colony will gain back 80% of the resources used in its construction. If a ship is not within orbit of a shipyard, it is destroyed and no resources are gained.
- Battle: after winning a battle - either against another player or pirates - A Debris field will form for the next 24 hours. The winner can immediately loot this up to the limit of their cargo capacity. Any remaining minerals will persist for a day then be lost to space.
Resources can be stored on the surface of a planet. They can also be stored in cargo containers (beron, farsu, limbalt and ziryl) and fuel tanks (olzine), and transferred between planets. When colonizing a planet, any surface resources are immediately accessible to the colony.
Beron is required for the construction of structures e.g. mines, power stations, farms, military camps, etc. Without it, no additional colony structures can be built.
Its chemical element symbol is Be and atomic number 26. By mass, it's the most common element on a planet, forming much of the planet's outer and inner cores.
Farsu is required for the construction of ship hulls and parts. It's impossible to build ships without a sufficient supply.
A tetravalent metalloid represented by the symbol Fa and atomic number 14; it's a hard, crystalline solid with a red metallic luster. A fairly common element which can be found on numerous planets.
Limbalt is used by ordnance-based weapons (kinetic cannons, rockets and minefields). It is stored on ships in ordnance modules which convert it into its weaponized form. It can also be transported in a ship's cargo, but when done so is not accessible to any ordnance-based weapons.
Its chemical element has the symbol Li and atomic number 22. It is a lustrous, transition metal with a blue color, low density, and high strength.
Ziryl is used for the production of energy weapons and parts e.g. shields, plasma cannons, beam turrets, etc. It's one of the less common resources, but vital for versatile ship design.
It's a transuranic radioactive chemical element with the symbol Zi and atomic number 94. An actinide metal of silver appearance that tarnishes when exposed to air and forms a dull coating when oxidized.
Olzine is the fuel used by engines to travel faster than their free warp speed (to carry olzine, a ship must be fitted with fuel tanks). Fuel (olzine) enables much faster travel, which can make the difference between catching an enemy, escaping an enemy, or faster movement of freight.
Olzine is a complex liquid represented by the symbol Oz and is highly radioactive. Naturally formed at great depths under huge pressure, deposits close to the surface can be typically found after significant seismic events.
